ICYMI: Georgia Democrats Ramp Up Voter Protection Operation Ahead of Primary, General Elections

May 20, 2024

As 11Alive reported this weekend, the Democratic Party of Georgia is ramping up its voter protection operation amid continued Republican attempts to make it harder to vote. Last month, Governor Kemp signed S.B. 189 into law, which encourages mass voter eligibility challenges by conservative activists.

“Republicans know they can’t win elections if everyone votes, which is why they continue to obstruct access to the ballot box,” said Tolulope Kevin Olasanoye, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “While Republicans engage in voter suppression, Georgia Democrats are strengthening our voter protection operation to ensure that every eligible Georgia voter can cast a ballot and have it counted.”

DPG’s Voter Protection Hotline (888-730-5816) has been active since 2018, and in the 2022 election cycle fielded more than 20,000 calls with the help of over 400 trained volunteers.

The DPG’s voter protection efforts are a clear contrast to Georgia Republicans, who after passing SB 202, have again doubled down on making it easier to remove voters from rolls with Governor Kemp signing SB 189 earlier this month.

As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an article titled “GOP activists plan mass voter eligibility challenges with new Georgia law,” conservative activists will take advantage of S.B.189 to “target voter registrations based on data from organizations such as EagleAI and True the Vote.” The nonpartisan Brennan Center said EagleAI “uses inferior technology to analyze less reliable data,” and ProPublica called True the Vote a “conspiracy-peddling nonprofit” whose “leadership [was] accused of using donations for personal gain.”

Georgia voters can call or text the Hotline anytime during voting hours at 888-730-5816.
