Georgia Democrats Stand With Ahmaud

May 8, 2020

As people across the country honor Ahmaud Arbery’s life today, Democratic Party of Georgia Chairwoman Nikema Williams released the following statement:

“Today is Ahmaud Arbery’s 26th birthday, but instead of a young man celebrating with friends and family, we have a Black community filled with grief and anger at a life gone too soon at the hands of white supremacy. As we go into Mother’s Day weekend, as the mother of a Black son, my heart breaks for Ahmaud Arbery’s family, who has seen every Black American’s worst fear realized, and arrests only made after 74 days and a video made public of their son’s murder.

The arrest of Ahmaud’s killers, made possible by the tireless work of activists and the Georgia NAACP, is only a first step towards justice. We must keep holding our leaders accountable for the Black deaths happening across the country every day, and work to elect sheriffs, district attorneys, and leaders at every level who will protect Black lives daily, and not just when the eyes of the nation are upon them.

Happy birthday, Ahmaud. I promise we will keep fighting for the future you deserved.”
