Ahead Of Trump’s Georgia Visit, Stacey Abrams & Georgia Democrats Slam Failed Pandemic Response

July 15, 2020

ATLANTA – This morning, Democratic Party of Georgia (DPG) Chairwoman Nikema Williams hosted a virtual press conference with Founder of Fair Fight Stacey Abrams and Savannah Mayor Van Johnson to slam Donald Trump’s empty promises and failed response to the coronavirus crisis, which has now resulted in over 100,000 COVID-19 cases in Georgia, and more than 3,000 Georgia coronavirus deaths.

“Trump’s incompetence and the failures of his coronavirus response are just the latest in a three-year chain of actions that have disproportionately hurt African Americans, as well as Latinos and Asian Americans in the United States, and particularly here in Georgia,” said Stacey Abrams, Founder of Fair Fight. “But we know that the health impacts of coronavirus are only the first of the challenges in the midst of this public health crisis. We are also watching an economic collapse and Trump’s corrupt recovery has repeatedly favored a very few well connected friends at the expense of working families and small businesses, particularly leaving Black Americans to bear the worst of his cratering economy.”

Added Abrams, “We know that together we can elect leaders, starting with Joe Biden, who see and believe in all Georgians. Joe Biden is the only person who is equipped, qualified and ready to lead the United States, and that is why Georgia is so excited to stand behind Joe Biden.”

“Today, Donald Trump is back in our state, not to check in on our sick or vulnerable, but for yet another infrastructure week. We know that this is just another attempt to cover his broken promises, as our roads continue to crumble and the country braces for the heavy economic impact of COVID-19,” said Democratic Party of Georgia Chairwoman Nikema Williams. “Fortunately, we know that we can get out of this mess when we elect Joe Biden as our next President. Joe Biden has a plan for how to create jobs and build a resilient and sustainable future for all Georgians. Joe Biden wants to put people back to work, working to build and upgrade our nation’s infrastructure so that it is modern, resilient and clean.”

“After President Trump spent months ignoring early warnings about coronavirus from health officials, our Governor Brian Kemp followed President Trump’s lead and refused to issue a shelter at home order and take real steps to stop the spread of this virus. The statistics are very clear —  on Tuesday, we surpassed 100,000 cases in the state of Georgia,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson. “President Trump and Governor Kemp are forcing Georgians to choose between a paycheck and our health. It is unacceptable. We need help. We need help from our federal government. Georgians can see through this diversion and deflection from what are our most pressing and prevailing issues. That’s why, come November, we will elect Joe Biden is our next president.”
