Trump vs. GOP Senate Contenders: Trump Now “Strongly” Disagrees With Kemp’s “Reckless” and “Irresponsible” Order Backed By Georgia’s Republican Senate Candidates

April 23, 2020

After public health officials decried Kemp’s order, Trump joins chorus condemning “reckless” plan as “too soon” while Perdue, Loeffler, and Collins still refuse to stand up for local communities and public safety

ATLANTA — Today, even President Donald Trump said he “strongly” disagrees with Governor* Brian Kemp’s “reckless” and “irresponsible” order forcing Georgia to reopen, claiming it would be “too soon” but Georgia’s Republican Senate contenders still refuse to stand up for local communities or medical professionals who have denounced Kemp’s order as “a very big risk.”

Both Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler have continued their steadfast support of Kemp and his “politically motivated” order, with Perdue previously promoting the governor’s announcement and Loeffler praising his order while joining Kemp in a virtual town hall the same day Trump criticized it. Top Trump ally Congressman Doug Collins, meanwhile, refused to stand up for public safety even after Kemp “said he expects the number of cases to continue to rise” despite moving to end protective measures.

Public health experts have already condemned Kemp’s “irresponsible” order, given that Georgia still lags other states in tests per capita along with data showing “the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Georgia and number of deaths…have been steadily increasing in the last month.” Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci was blunt about Kemp’s plan: “I would advise him…not to do that.”

“Georgia Republicans’ reckless response to the coronavirus pandemic has now gotten so out of hand that even President Donald Trump is joining a chorus of public health experts condemning Governor Brian Kemp’s irresponsible order,” said Alex Floyd, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler along with Congressman Doug Collins all refused to stand up for local communities and Georgia’s medical experts to oppose this reckless order. Now, even Trump is criticizing this disastrous plan that puts politics ahead of protecting Georgia families.”
