FLASHBACK: One Month Ago, House Passed Critical Coronavirus Relief While Perdue and Loeffler Took a Long Weekend

April 14, 2020

Senate Republicans held up critical aid for Georgia families like free coronavirus testing, paid sick leave, and nutrition assistance

ATLANTA — One month ago, the House worked late to pass a bipartisan emergency aid package on COVID-19 while Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler followed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s lead and took a long weekend, holding up vital aid at a time when Americans needed it most.

This legislation enacted critical measures like free testing, paid emergency leave, and food assistance to help families cope with the health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic — crucial provisions that Georgia families needed without delay. But instead of working to pass this critical aid package as quickly as possible, Republican Senators like Perdue and Loeffler chose to take a long weekend instead

Now, as Georgia health care providers are “scrambling” after the Trump administration “wasted months” to prepare for the coronavirus outbreak, Perdue and Loeffler are still focused on scoring political points in Washington. Even after Trump “played down the seriousness of the virus” and the administration left Georgia with only “one-quarter of the requested N95 masks and just over a third of requested ventilators,” Perdue and Loeffler are continuing to praise the administration rather than hold it accountable to adequately respond to the coronavirus outbreak.
