Help Move Georgia Forward
Loeffler set to meet with anti-health care Supreme Court nominee who previously denounced decision upholding the health care law as Republicans still have no plan to protect those with pre-existing conditions
ATLANTA — As Senator Kelly Loeffler is set to meet with anti-health care Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett today, we have one question for the unelected senator: Since she won’t talk to Georgians about her views on health care or any plans to protect Georgians with pre-existing conditions, will she ask Barrett about her own anti-health care record?
Loeffler so far has dodged giving direct answers about her party’s reckless lawsuit to completely overturn the health care law and threaten protections for 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions even as she has promised to stand with President Donald Trump and Republican leadership “100%.” But Trump’s nominee Barrett has a long track record as a “vocal opponent” of the health care law.
Barrett previously denounced Chief Justice John Roberts’ decision upholding the health care law, claiming he “pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute” And she has also attacked a ruling that protected the law’s subsidies that have helped Americans gain health care coverage, arguing that the decision in this case amounted to “distort[ing]” the law.
Now, as Republicans still lack any clear plan to protect those pre-existing conditions if their reckless lawsuit is successful, Loeffler is still remaining silent on this critical issue for millions of Americans.
“Senator Kelly Loeffler says she’ll stand behind her party ‘100%’ — even as her party has no plan to protect those with pre-existing conditions if their lawsuit to overturn the health care law is successful,” said Alex Floyd, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “As she meets today with Amy Coney Barrett, it’s time for Loeffler to answer: if Barrett votes on the Supreme Court to strike down the health care law, what’s Loeffler’s plan for 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions?”
