While Georgians Struggle, Republicans Poised to Vote Against Direct Payments

February 26, 2021

Ahead of today’s vote in the U.S. House on the Biden-Harris administration’s American Rescue Plan, Republicans are expected to vote against direct relief payments to Americans – even though poll after poll shows that an overwhelming, bipartisan majority of Americans supports the additional stimulus checks.

Meanwhile, Democrats are committed to putting direct payments and thousands of dollars worth of additional benefits in the hands of working people who have bills to pay and kids to feed. While Georgia House Republicans play political games with Americans’ livelihoods, Georgia’s House Democrats are fulfilling their promise to deliver immediate, much-needed relief to struggling individuals and families.

“That Republicans plan to vote against these payments – and against their own constituents – is unconscionable. Georgians need money now, and this historic stimulus package is the first step to getting millions back on their feet,” said Maggie Chambers, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Georgia’s House Republicans’ willingness to leave our state high and dry for the sake of partisan political games shows just how out of touch they are.”

Poll after poll shows that a vast, bipartisan majority of Americans support the Biden-Harris relief plan:

Morning Consult: “76 percent said they back the stimulus package, including 52 percent who said they ‘strongly’ support the bill…More than half of GOP voters still back the stimulus package at 60 percent.”

The Economist: “66% of Americans in a new The Economist/YouGov poll said they support Biden’s economic/covid-19 relief plan.”

McClatchy: “President Joe Biden’s pandemic relief bill is receiving overwhelming approval from swing voters, which include many of former President Donald Trump’s supporters.”

New York Times: “Republican leaders in Washington firmly oppose the president’s stimulus plan, but a sizable number of Trump voters support it, interviews and polls show.”
