As scrutiny of Herschel Walker’s “heavy on Fox News spots and curated closed-door campaign” continues, attention now turns to the extensive ties between Trump’s handpicked candidate and January 6th insurrection conspirator Marjorie Taylor Greene. Here’s how her early political and financial support have factored in the race and what it says about Walker:
- Both Walker and Greene are complicit in the deadly January 6th insurrection. Greene is under heavy scrutiny today following a breaking news report that identifies her as one of several members of Congress who were “intimately involved in planning” the deadly January 6th rally-turned-insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Walker — who “called for Trump and his allies to conduct a ‘total cleansing’ two days before the Jan. 6 insurrection” — has spread the same fringe conspiracy theories that stoked on the rioters.
- Greene quickly endorsed Walker, providing her political support at the start of the campaign. Greene was one of Walker’s earliest endorsers and defended him in the face of concerns about his campaign from Republicans –– including Mitch McConnell, who tried to keep Walker out of the race. She called the stories that came out about Walker’s past “organized opposition research” orchestrated by McConnell to “dirty up” the Trump-tapped candidate.
- The Walker and Greene campaigns share “deep financial ties.” OpenSecrets detailed how Walker’s campaign “has deep financial ties to…controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene,” sharing multiple agents who play key roles in their campaigns’ financial operations. Greene also donated thousands of dollars to Walker’s primary campaign last month.
- Walker and Greene have both backed impeaching President Biden. Minutes after giving a speech about finding unity at Trump’s Perry rally, Herschel Walker posed for a photo with Marjorie Taylor Greene while holding an “IMPEACH BIDEN” sign, which Greene spent thousands of dollars promoting.
“Herschel Walker is not just accepting political and financial support from divisive politicians like Greene and Trump — he’s embracing their damaging and out-of-step positions instead of focusing on the issues that Georgians care about,” said Dan Gottlieb, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia.
