President Biden and Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act, opposed by all eight of Georgia’s congressional Republicans, secured a “major win for American solar manufacturing with a deep Georgia connection,” according to a new report from Axios. The South Korean solar panel manufacturing company Qcells’ facility in Dalton is the largest in the country.

Axios: Georgia’s solar win tucked inside the federal spending package

  • Prior to this bill, there were no sustained and long-term domestic federal incentives for solar manufacturing specifically, [Qcells spokesman Scott] Moscowitz said. “It really completely changes the environment for manufacturing clean energy products in the U.S.”
  • The solar industry has been hoping for something like this, “for forever,” Moscowitz told Axios. “This bill is a huge deal.”
  • A coalition of solar manufacturers advocating for the bill estimated that after passage the industry will see 18,000 new direct manufacturing jobs by 2025, and solar panels would be nearly 100% American-made by 2030.

“President Biden and Georgia Democrats are already delivering good-paying jobs in Dalton and across Georgia with the Inflation Reduction Act – meanwhile, Georgia Republicans voted against cutting energy costs and bringing in thousands of new domestic manufacturing opportunities,” said Democratic Party of Georgia spokesperson Ryan Radulovacki.
