Serving Together to Realize Dr. King’s Dream

January 20, 2014

Friends,

Today we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who inspired the world to stand up for what is right and what is just. We celebrate his life and recognize how his legacy continues to serve as a call to action for community service. Dr. King spurred our country to make great forward strides within civil rights and social justice reform, but we know that our struggle to realize his vision for a beloved community continues.

In a 1954 sermon, Dr. King said “The real problem is that through our scientific genius we’ve made of the world a neighborhood, but through our moral and spiritual genius we’ve failed to make of it a brotherhood.”

Georgia Democrats realize the truth in those words and know that we are at our best when we set aside our own interests and instead labor to build one another up, working as a community for the common good.

Georgia’s own Congressman John Lewis co-authored the federal legislation making today, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a national holiday. The holiday is born out of Congressman Lewis’ desire to encourage individuals to work toward a more perfect union by serving their community. Share with us how you’ve chosen to serve today by posting on our Facebook page or tweet using the hashtag #ServeGA.

Today, and for the remainder of 2014, let’s work together to realize Dr. King’s dream.

Sincerely,

DuBose Porter
