Georgia – The Democratic Party of Georgia State Delegation has unanimously elected the Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery as Chairman to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
“Dr. Lowery has been a long-time advocate of civil rights, human rights, fairness and equality. These are all values that Georgia Democrats strive toward every day,” said DPG Chairman Mike Berlon. “His leadership in Charlotte is invaluable.”
“I’m pleased to represent the fine state of Georgia in nominating the President for his second term,” said Dr. Lowery. “I appreciate the hard work that the Democratic Party of Georgia is doing to move our state forward this election year.”
Dr. Lowery has been called the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement” by the NAACP and was awarded their Lifetime Achievement Award. He has received numerous accolades from organizations and universities, including Emory University, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the National Urban League, Morehouse College and Alabama State University. Lowery delivered the Inauguration Benediction in 2008, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, from President Obama in 2009.
The Democratic National Convention will take place in Charlotte from September 4th – 6th. Georgia will be sending 133 delegates, including former President Jimmy Carter and all five Democratic Congressmen from the state.
