DPG Chairman DuBose Porter Calls on Nathan Deal and Georgia GOP to Honor MLK’s Legacy with More than a Proposal for Monument
Porter calls Deal’s remarks “hollow”
Atlanta, GA – Yesterday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service memorial at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Nathan Deal pledged to work with the General Assembly in “finding an appropriate way to honor Dr. King on our Capitol Hill.”
“There is no question that Dr. King should be celebrated in a place of prominence at the Capitol,” said Democratic Party of Georgia Chair DuBose Porter. “However, based on his past actions, yesterday’s move by Deal is simply hollow.”
Chairman Porter challenged Governor Deal and Georgia Republicans to package the intended honor with a legislative package reflecting the ideals and values of Dr. King. “If Republicans have had an election year epiphany and want to honor Dr. King’s legacy, honor him by making significant and sincere investments in equal opportunity for our people,” continued Chairman Porter. “Honor his legacy by repealing Georgia’s discriminatory Voter ID laws, some of the harshest in the nation. Honor his legacy by expanding Medicaid to provide quality affordable health care for all Georgians. Honor his legacy by giving all Georgians the right to lead a private life, free of persecution and politicization. Honor his legacy by guaranteeing workers a living wage and a fair shot at working their way in to the middle class.”
“Yesterday’s holiday should have been a call to service and community building,” said Chairman Porter. “Instead, Nathan Deal used his platform to deliver political platitudes of convenience.”
