Connie Green Background

This week, former State Senator Connie Stokes became Georgia Democrats’ nominee for Lt. Governor.

Democratic Party of Georgia Chair DuBose Porter welcomed Connie to the ballot saying, “Connie is known for her public service and her passion for Georgia’s families. Whether she was fighting for laws against domestic violence and child abuse under the Gold Dome or working to improve DeKalb County as a Commissioner, she has brought compassion, intellect and drive to every issue she has championed.”

Connie served under Georgia’s Gold Dome from 1994 to 2004 and worked tirelessly to make Georgia not just a place to live, but a place to call home. Her leadership earned her a top spot as floor leader to then Governor Roy Barnes and as the Chairwoman of the powerful Senate Health and Human Services Committee. It was in that role that Connie became a well-known advocate for Georgia’s families and healthy lifestyle.

Connie’s distinguished public service career continued in 2004 when she was elected to the DeKalb County Commission.  Again, her leadership and intellect allowed her to quickly work her way to the top as the Chair of Budget and Finance Committee where she championed efficiency in government while ensuring a balanced budget.

Connie has been a fierce champion for women, serving as Board President of Women’s Resource Center to End Violence and a member of International Women’s Forum, The Women’s Council Board of Governors and the National Board of the Coalition of 100 Black Women.

In addition to her public service career, Connie Stokes is a successful businesswoman, working as a real estate broker and a management consultant.

Connie is married to Dr. James A. Stokes and they have three adult sons and two grandsons. They live in the metro-Atlanta area and are members of St. Philip AME Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
