Help Move Georgia Forward
Barrett, “a longtime opponent” of the health care law, is nominated as Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in lawsuit aimed at overturning the entire law and its vital protections
ATLANTA — Today, Senator Kelly Loeffler and Congressman Doug Collins rushed to stand behind President Donald Trump’s radical anti-health care Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett — putting the health care of millions of Americans at risk during a global pandemic.
Barrett has a long track record as a “vocal opponent” of the health care law that provides critical protections for 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions. Barrett previously denounced Chief Justice John Roberts’ decision upholding the health care law, claiming he “pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute.”
Barrett has also attacked a ruling that protected the law’s subsidies that have helped Americans gain health care coverage, arguing that the decision in this case amounted to “distort[ing]” the law. And Barrett has condemned the health care law’s provision providing millions of American women access to contraception, calling it an “assault on religious liberty.”
If Barrett is confirmed and Republicans are successful in their reckless lawsuit to overturn the entire health care law, then the results for Georgia could be devastating:
But instead of standing up for Georgians’ health care, Loeffler (who was previously forced to admit this push was unprecedented) and Collins are tripping over themselves to force through Barrett and her reckless agenda.
“By rushing to support an anti-health care Supreme Court nominee like Amy Coney Barrett, Senator Kelly Loeffler and Congressman Doug Collins are threatening the health care coverage of millions of Americans in the middle of a pandemic,” said Alex Floyd, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “This unprecedented rush backed by Loeffler and Collins to confirm a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court less than two months before an election is nothing short of a reckless power grab that puts Americans’ basic rights and the health care law at risk.”
