ATLANTA – As she begins her role as Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, Nikema Williams is committed to uplifting Democratic values across the state, and building coalitions that will last for years to come. This week, Chair Williams shared her goals of building the Party’s reach beyond campaign cycles, and keeping citizens engaged all year round.

And it brought Williams to the forefront after an eventful year. First elected to the Legislature in 2017, she was a top Abrams ally who gained national attention when she was arrested in December while taking part in a “count every vote” demonstration at the statehouse.

On Saturday, she was overwhelmingly elected party chairwoman after a pledge to “constantly let people know how Brian Kemp is failing us” — and a promise to create a year-round field operation to lay the groundwork early for 2020.

Williams said a first order of business is to grow the party’s grassroots network as they gear up for the U.S Senate and presidential elections next year.

“My grandma taught me if you stay ready, you’ll be ready,” Williams said. “We’re going to build a year-round (operation), going directly to voters and reminding people what’s happened in the Legislature as we gear up for 2020. Democracy does not start and stop on Election Day.”
