ICYMI: Georgia Republicans Unanimously Vote For Government Shutdown

October 1, 2021

“All eight Georgia Republicans of our GOP House delegation members were a ‘no’ on the funding extension.”

Yesterday, every single Georgia congressional Republican put millions of Georgia livelihoods at risk by voting against keeping America’s government operating — displaying Republicans’ dangerous partisan gamesmanship once again.

While GOP Reps. Buddy Carter, Drew Ferguson, Austin Scott, Andrew Clyde, Jody Hice, Barry Loudermilk, Rick Allen, and Marjorie Taylor Greene once again put politics ahead of Georgians, all six Georgia House Democrats and both of Georgia’s Senators joined a bipartisan effort to keep the government open and working for the people of Georgia.

“It is absolutely shameful that Georgia Republicans would unanimously support a government shutdown in the middle of a global pandemic while millions of Georgia families’ livelihoods were on the line. While President Biden and Georgia’s Democratic representatives are fighting to move our state forwards, the GOP has shown time and time again this year that they would rather actively stand in the way of getting our economy back on track and defeating this pandemic,” Rhyan Lake, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Georgia, said.

Georgia Republicans’ partisan grandstanding jeopardized the livelihoods of:

  • Over 1.8 million Georgians who receive monthly Social Security benefits from the federal government.
  • More than 697,000 veterans who live in Georgia, including over 186,000 who receive disability compensation and about 10,000 who receive pension as of 2017.
  • About 72,000 Georgians who are civil servants for the federal government.
  • About 69,000 active duty military members in Georgia, the fifth-most in the country.
  • Over 847,000 Georgia households receiving food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
