DPG Releases Updated Delegate Selection Plan

April 27, 2020

ATLANTA – In line with the Secretary of State’s April 9th postponement of Georgia’s presidential primary to June 9th, today the Democratic Party of Georgia released updates to Georgia’s Delegate Selection Plan to comply with this new timeline and ensure that all Georgia Democrats can participate in virtual delegate selection activities.

Democratic Party of Georgia Chairwoman Nikema Williams released the following statement:

“Our team has worked around the clock to adjust to our new normal, and make sure that we can protect the health and safety of Georgians while making our delegate selection process open to all. Our new virtual delegate selection model will help us make participation more accessible to all Georgians, and build the most diverse delegation in Georgia history.

We are excited to engage with Georgians in every corner of the state throughout this process, and work together to turn Georgia blue in 2020.”

Below are the newest changes made in this version of the Delegate Selection Plan, in addition to the Party’s work to make this process virtual.

  • Voting dates have been adjusted to reflect the change of date for Georgia’s Presidential Preference Primary.
    • The deadline for district-level delegate candidates to file for candidacy is April 30th, with district level elections held on May 23rd.
    • The deadline for PLEO and at-large delegate candidates to file for candidacy is now May 28th, with elections held on June 20th.
  • All voting for delegates has been converted from in-person requirements to remote voting, allowing Georgians to elect delegates from the safety of their homes.
  • All meetings of Georgia’s delegation have been moved to virtual meetings in advance of the Convention.
  • Rather than registering to vote in delegate elections in-person, Georgians will have until May 8 to register to become electors for their district-level elections, and will be able to select their delegate choices through online voting.
  • District-level delegate selection will now take place before the June 9th primary, with the results of those elections ranking delegate candidates according to vote totals and gender rules.
  • After the Presidential Primary, election results will determine the proportional allotment of delegates at the district level or statewide level.
