Today, following Georgia Republicans’ passage of S.B. 140 banning gender affirming care for transgender youth, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:
“Today, with the passage of S.B. 140, Georgia Republicans continued their shameful track record of targeting vulnerable Georgians and interfering with private medical decisions for political gain. Republicans rammed S.B. 140 through despite Georgians showing up in force – doctors, parents, transgender youth and their advocates, and more – with an unequivocal warning: this bill will harm trans children. That Georgia Republicans would pass a bill targeting Georgia children and criminalizing health care providers to pander to their extreme base is a disturbing reminder that they will always put politics ahead of people.
“In the wake of this egregious overreach by Republicans, young trans Georgians should know that Georgia Democrats stand arm-in-arm with you, and we will never stop fighting to defend your right to thrive in our state.”
