Help Move Georgia Forward
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:
“Today, the entire nation pauses to celebrate the life of a great Georgian and American, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose moral leadership brought this country closer to its founding ideals of justice and equality for all. This year’s commemoration is even more vital and meaningful as we witness a distressing renewal of the very same forces of oppression that Dr. King confronted over a half a century ago.
“In the nearly four decades since our country has observed this holiday, there has been perhaps no sharper reversal of Dr. King’s work than that which we have seen over the past year. In Dr. King’s home state of Georgia, after people of color voted in historic numbers, a group of Republican, majority-white legislators retaliated by making it harder to cast a ballot – a blatant slap in the face to Dr. King’s legacy. As we remember Dr. King, we must also hold accountable those who have aided and abetted voter suppression yet evoke his name today. Honoring Dr. King demands nothing less than a full commitment to protecting the civil rights of all, building a society that leaves nobody behind, and removing barriers to the ballot box.
“I pray for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day when we are able to celebrate the restoration and strengthening of the rights Dr. King dedicated his life to advancing. As we continue that fight, Georgia Democrats invite all good faith partners to join us in working to build the world Dr. King envisioned, where opportunity belongs to all regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic background, or zip code.”
