UPDATED REPORT: Democratic Party of Georgia Outlines Historic 2020-2021 Election Cycle Wins, Path to Victory in 2022

December 21, 2021

Today, the Democratic Party of Georgia released an updated report recounting Democrats’ wins in Georgia in the 2021 municipal elections, building on historic victories during the 2020 election cycle. The report highlights the core elements of the party’s successful electoral program and outlines the continued path forward to victory for Georgia Democrats in 2022 as we work to defend Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock’s seat, flip statewide offices, and win even more seats in the state legislature.

The report cites four key building blocks of DPG’s winning infrastructure and strategy:

  • Organize year-round and compete everywhere.
  • Engage a wide and diverse coalition of voters.
  • Strengthen voter turnout across the board.
  • Invest in a world-class voter protection program.

Among Georgia Democrats’ key wins in 2020 and 2021:

  • 48 seats flipped in 25 counties across Georgia in DPG-targeted 2021 municipal races, including mayorships in Warner Robins, McDonough, Stone Mountain, Hampton, and Cairo, and crucial city council seats in Lawrenceville, Peachtree Corners, Sandy Springs, Tucker, Stone Mountain, Duluth, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Kennesaw, and Powder Springs.
  • The only state where Democrats picked up at least one seat in both the State House and State Senate in 2020.
  • The only state where Democrats flipped a U.S. House seat in 2020 with the election of Carolyn Bourdeaux in the seventh congressional district.
  • Flipped Georgia’s two U.S. Senate seats and secured the Democratic Senate majority in electing Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, the first two Democratic wins in a federal statewide runoff election in Georgia’s history.
  • First Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia since Bill Clinton in 1992, and the best Democratic presidential candidate performance in Georgia since Jimmy Carter in 1980.

“Between the 2020 and 2021 elections, Georgia Democrats have a lot to celebrate and be thankful for this holiday season,” said Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “After voting to send a Democrat to the White House for the first time in 28 years in 2020 and flipping both U.S. Senate seats blue earlier this year, we saw that Georgia Democrats’ momentum is still growing as voters from metro Atlanta to rural Georgia came out in full force in the 2021 municipal elections. Georgia voters are as energized as ever heading into the new year, and Democrats are well-positioned to continue mobilizing voters and flipping seats across the state in 2022 and beyond.”

“This report makes clear that Georgia Democrats’ wins in 2020 and 2021 were not flukes – Democrats and organizers across our state have been building towards this moment for years,” said Scott Hogan, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Our successful past two election cycles show that Democrats can continue to win in Georgia and nationwide with strong candidates, strategic organizing, a commitment to voter protection, and early investments. As Republicans step up their anti-voting agenda nationwide, Democrats must fight hard, build fast, and present a strong, strategic front ready to compete throughout the country in 2022.”
