In just the latest sign of turmoil roiling through the Georgia GOP, party chair Josh McKoon admitted to the AJC on Monday that he “has not heard back from Jackson since he became the party’s nominee.”
This comes just a week after Burt Jones refused to commit to voting for Jackson in November – and also revealed that he still has not heard from Jackson or his campaign – in what the AJC reported as the “clearest sign yet that the Republican Party has not yet moved beyond a costly and bruising contest dominated by tens of millions of dollars in attack ads, dueling accusations of corruption and a proxy fight over the party’s direction.”
This turmoil is felt far and wide within the party, with many GOP activists remaining “openly skeptical” of Jackson’s candidacy. Jones shared his belief on the AJC’s “Politically Georgia” podcast that Jackson has “‘alienated’ grassroots activists and other longtime GOP loyalists.”
In that same podcast, Jones also warned that “November is going to be a challenge” for Republicans with Jackson as the nominee, which comes as new polling from State Navigate shows Keisha Lance Bottoms taking a seven-point lead over Jackson.
“Slick Rick thinks he can just swoop in and buy Georgians’ votes, but he’s ignoring just how divided the Georgia GOP truly is,” said Democratic Party of Georgia spokesperson Jake Strickland. “While Jackson refuses to even pick up the phone and call the leaders of his party, Georgia Democrats are united behind Keisha Lance Bottoms and are doing the critical work to deliver a victory in November.”
