Brian Kemp Uses Tourism Forum to Tout Legislation That’s Bad for Georgia’s Economy

ATLANTA – Earlier this evening, Brian Kemp used an appearance before Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus as an opportunity to reiterate his support for discriminatory legislation that would hurt Georgia’s economy.

“For Brian Kemp to go before the tourism bureau and talk about his support for policies that are bad for tourism is quite astounding,” said Democratic Party of Georgia LGBTQ Caucus Chair Colton Griffin. “Make no mistake: the legislation Brian Kemp supports will discriminate against the LGBTQ community and create an economic disaster for all of Georgia. We’ve seen this movie before in Indiana, in North Carolina, and in other states. Georgia will not thrive unless we attract the best and the brightest to our state. In order for Georgia to thrive, we cannot have Brian Kemp as governor.”

More than 400 Georgia companies, including members of Georgia’s vibrant film industry, oppose the kind of discriminatory legislation Kemp supports.

GA Senate Republicans Pass Bill to Deny Adoption Rights to LGBTQ Parents

Release:  Friday, February 23, 2018

Atlanta, GA – Today, Georgia Senate Republicans passed Senate Bill 375, allowing adoption agencies to deny LGBTQ parents under the guise of religious freedom.

“Thousands of kids in Georgia are waiting to become a part of loving families, and the GOP’s solution to this problem is to create new problems. When will Republicans stop targeting Georgia’s LGBTQ community out of political spite? Love is love, and when children need a home, they should be placed in the safe care of the Georgians willing to open their doors and grow their family. Period.” – Michael Smith, Communications Director

GA Senate Republicans Pass FADA, Promoting State-sanctioned Discrimination

Release:  Friday, February 19, 2016

Georgia Senate Republicans Pass FADA, Promoting State-sanctioned Discrimination

Atlanta, GA – Today, the Georgia State Senate passed the so-called First Amendment Defense Act (FADA). Using every trick in the political maneuvering playbook, Republicans passed the bill out of an unlikely committee and used a procedural maneuver to stifle dissenting voices.

Democratic Party of Georgia Communications Director Michael Smith issued the following statement on today’s vote.

“Senate Republicans manipulated the rules to sidestep public input. They know that a majority of Georgians do not believe in discrimination and exclusion. Those aren’t our values. That’s not who we are.

“If this piece of legislation is signed in to law, millions of hard-earned tax dollars will be spent to get the radical right’s paw prints out of the henhouse. This bill is not only an attack on the dignity of LGBTQ families, but an attack on all families and an attack on our state’s reputation. This bill is bad business and nothing more than a vulgar political stunt wielded by politicians who want to erase the progress we’ve made as a country.

“Democrats will continue to fight these types of disingenuous attacks on Georgia families, and will continue to fight for a more just and equal state.”
