DPG Statement on LGBTQ History Month & Atlanta Pride

Release:  Friday, October 7, 2016

Atlanta, GA – Democratic Party of Georgia LGBTQ Caucus Chair Jim Taflinger and First Vice Chair Colton Griffin issued the following joint statement in honor of LGBTQ History Month and Atlanta Pride.

“As we celebrate LGBTQ History Month and the 46th year of Pride celebrations in Atlanta, the Democratic Party of Georgia LGBTQ Caucus extends a special thanks to our allies and friends who continue to stand with us in advancing our journey towards full equality.

“The stakes in this year’s elections are extremely high and the end result will impact all of us for years to come. We have a clear choice. As a country, we can give in to the politics of hate and fear and cynicism, and enable policies that would strip away the civil liberties of the LGBTQ community and many others. Or we can elect Hillary Clinton and Georgia Democrats, who will fight for the rights of us all. We can preserve and build on the progress made under President Obama’s leadership and push our county forward.

“This month, it’s important to remember that Georgia remains a state that provides zero basic protections for LGBTQ individuals. We can be fired from work, discriminated in housing, and denied basic benefits based solely on whom we love. However, with the support of our allies and the leadership of Georgia Democrats in the state legislature, our march towards full equality and fairness and justice is just over the horizon.

“We welcome all Democrats and friends to join us this weekend at the Atlanta Pride celebration, with a special invitation to march with us in the Pride Parade. The parade kicks off at the Civic Center Marta Station at noon this Sunday, October 9th.

“A key value of the Democratic Party of Georgia is the belief that we are not identified by labels or our differences. We support each other as one family. We fight for each other’s rights. And we lift each other up because we are stronger together.”

DPG Chair Issues Statement in Honor of Atlanta Pride

Release:  Friday, October 10, 2014

Democratic Party of Georgia Chair Issues Statement in Honor of Atlanta Pride

Atlanta, GA – Today, Democratic Party of Georgia Chair DuBose Porter issued the following statement in honor of Atlanta Pride.

“This week, we celebrate the contributions made by the LGBT community and just how far we have come as a nation on LGBT rights. While our state has miles to go before we sleep, know that state Democratic lawmakers will continue to work toward a Georgia that treats all its citizens equally under the law.

“I’m proud that our Party has led the fight against the discrimination of all people—regardless of who they love. That’s one of the many reasons why I will be marching with Georgia Democrats and the DPG staff in this Sunday’s Pride parade.

“We have plenty of reasons to celebrate, but that does not mean we should be satisfied. We cannot stop until all men and women—who are created equally—are treated equally.”

Georgia Democrats: “LGBT Community is Essential to our Success”

Fun and Fellowship Expected at Atlanta Pride 2011

Atlanta – Georgia Democrats will be represented by four different groups at one of the longest-running LGBT celebrations in the nation, Atlanta Pride 2011.

Volunteers from the Democratic Party of Georgia LGBT Caucus, Stonewall Democrats, Fulton County Democrats and the Young Democrats of Georgia will be on hand to register voters at the festival and march in the popular Pride Parade. The different groups represent a broad cross-section of Georgia progressives- of every color, every gender, from every corner of the state.

“Anyone who wants to march in the parade or help us register new voters is welcome!” said Louis Elrod, President of the Young Democrats of Georgia. “We are an inclusive party and this is an inclusive event.”

“Its great for all four organizations to be involved in Pride. The LGBT community is essential to our success not just in an election year but every year,” said George Johnson, LGBT Caucus Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia.

Atlanta Pride is scheduled for October 8 and 9 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. Volunteer opportunities with Georgia Democrats include two hour shifts at the Democratic booth from 10 am – 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, and marching with Georgia Democrats at the parade on Sunday.

Potential volunteers are encouraged to email “[email protected]” for more information.
