Upon the signing into law today of HB 479, an overhaul of Georgia’s citizen’s arrest law, Scott Hogan, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:

“Today is a momentous day in Georgia as we officially become the first state to end the archaic, racist practice of citizen’s arrest. Though it should not have taken Ahmaud Arbery’s death to finally address the outdated law, today’s signing nonetheless brings us one step closer to reforming the system that killed Ahmaud and is killing Black Americans across this country. Thank you to Ahmaud’s family, the activists and advocates that tirelessly fought for this repeal for so long, and to Democrats in the state legislature for championing this effort. We must keep marching forward in our ongoing work to remember Ahmaud and carry on his legacy as we fight for justice.
