AJN: “Rick Jackson, a billionaire running for Georgia governor, took credit for the state’s abortion ban and said he would support even stricter prohibitions on the procedure.”

Today, new reporting from American Journal News reveals that GOP candidate Rick Jackson is taking credit for working “behind the scenes” to pass Georgia’s extreme six-week abortion ban into law – and would “absolutely confirm” even stricter limits if elected governor.

Speaking to a crowd in Martinez on March 21, Jackson said that Georgia’s abortion ban left the state in a “good place,” and that he was “real pleased [he] was a part of that behind the scenes,” even as the ban has resulted in a maternal mortality crisis sweeping the state.

Jackson then went on to admit he would “absolutely confirm” a total abortion ban if one was brought to his desk – another extreme proposal within the GOP gubernatorial field, all of whom support extreme abortion bans that are wildly out-of-step and unpopular with Georgia voters.

Georgia has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, and at least two women have suffered preventable deaths as a result. Jackson’s suggestion of a total abortion ban would make things much worse, intensifying Georgia’s maternal mortality crisis and deepening the OBGYN shortage that already makes care inaccessible in many communities.
