Today, Mike Pence announced he’s returning to Atlanta for the second time in a week — after a truly devastating week for America, as the country has now reached over 100,000 coronavirus deaths and over 40 million unemployment claims.

“Since Mike Pence’s last visit to Atlanta, the U.S. has now reached 100,000 total coronavirus deaths and 40 million unemployed Americans thanks to the Trump administration’s mishandling of this crisis — and that’s just in the last week,” said Maggie Chambers, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “No matter how many times Pence visits Georgia, the facts don’t lie: Georgians are still struggling from this health and economic crisis, and our country is worse off because of this administration.”

Here’s what’s happened in Georgia and the country since Pence’s visit last Friday:

  • The U.S. reached 100,000 American coronavirus deaths – more than any other country in the world.
  • Georgia’s week to week COVID-19 cases went up 26% over the last week according to an AJC analysis.
  • Reports show that 2.1 million more Americans filed for unemployment, making a total of over 40 million unemployed Americans since this crisis began.
  • Georgia Republican legislators are preparing to potentially cut jobs for teachers and state employees due to budget shortfalls.
