Elected leaders highlighted Burt Jones’ and Rick Jackson’s refusal to fight for working families
On Monday, metro Atlanta state and local leaders held a press conference to call out Republican candidates for governor Burt Jones and Rick Jackson for failing to fight to suspend the gas tax, driving further pain at the pump for Georgians all across our state.
At the event, DeKalb CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, Representative Sam Park, and Representative Stacey Evans spoke about Jones’ and Jackson’s record of refusing to stand up for relief at the gas pump.
The ‘Jones and Jackson Are Out For Themselves Tour’ kicked off in Columbus earlier this week, continued into Savannah and Macon, before concluding in Atlanta on Monday.
Here’s what they had to say about Jones’ and Jackson’s refusal to fight for working Georgians:
CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson: “Since February, gas prices have soared, and families across the state of Georgia are determining how they will continue to pay more than $1 more per gallon at the gas pump. But rather than stand up for hardworking people, Jones and Jackson are flat out ignoring the question. Now, I was always taught that no response is a response – and Burt Jones has failed to respond at all.”
Representative Sam Park: “Working families are struggling right now, but Burt Jones and Rick Jackson have made it clear that they don’t care. They refuse to fight for relief, and they’ve given Georgians little reason to think they would ever work to lower costs — at the pump or anywhere else. I mean, Jones is the heir to one of the largest petroleum companies across the state. They’re not looking out for you, Georgia – they’re looking out for their bottom line.”
Representative Stacey Evans: “We need a governor who understands hard-working Georgians’ problems and will work for a solution. Jackson and Jones don’t understand our struggles. They aren’t interested in fighting for us, but thank goodness Keisha Lance Bottoms – on the other hand, she gets it – She’s calling on leaders to bring costs down. That’s why she immediately jumped into action to call for an extension of the gas tax suspension.”
As a reminder, Jones and Jackson oppose relief at the gas pump:
- As Georgians pay more and more at the pump, Burt Jones is refusing to fight for price relief at the pump. When asked for his position on the tax, Jones has repeatedly “not respond[ed] to a request for comment.”
- Jackson has revealed that he thinks bringing back the gas tax is the “right and prudent” thing to do. He’s also admitted to having large investments in oil companies as these companies make record profits off Trump’s Iran War.
- Keisha Lance Bottoms has made clear she would push for a gas tax suspension as governor. She’s laser focused on lowering costs and making Georgia more affordable for working families.
