Elected and community leaders highlighted Burt Jones’ and Rick Jackson’s refusal to fight for working families
Today, Macon state and local leaders held a press conference to call out Republican candidates for governor Burt Jones and Rick Jackson for failing to fight to suspend the gas tax, driving further pain at the pump for Georgians all across our state.
At the event, Representative Miriam Paris, Commissioner Stanley Stewart, and community advocate Kristen Kiefer spoke about Jones’ and Jackson’s record of refusing to stand up for relief at the gas pump.
The ‘Jones and Jackson Are Out For Themselves Tour’ kicked off in Columbus earlier this week, continued into Savannah and Macon, and will wrap up in Atlanta next week, for which details will be released in coming days.
Here’s what they had to say about Jones’ and Jackson’s refusal to fight for working Georgians:
Representative Miriam Paris: “Since February, gas prices have soared. Now as families are considering summer vacations they are paying nearly $1 more per gallon than they were last year. But rather than stand up for working people, Jones and Jackson are flat out refusing to fight for relief at the pumps.”
Commissioner Stanley Stewart: “Democrats are the ones talking about your everyday issues, from wages to expenses, from childcare to health care, from gas prices to food prices. These are household and human issues that must be addressed.”
Kirsten Kiefer: “ Gas prices are completely out of hand. It’s up more than $1 a gallon since February, and just down the road from here in Twiggs County is $4.11 a gallon. […] I’m here to say that we are sick and tired of paying sky-high gas prices, and we need someone who will bring our costs down.”
As a reminder, Jones and Jackson oppose relief at the gas pump:
- As Georgians pay more and more at the pump, Burt Jones is refusing to fight for price relief at the pump. When asked for his position on the tax, Jones has repeatedly “not respond[ed] to a request for comment.”
- Jackson has revealed that he thinks bringing back the gas tax is the “right and prudent thing to do. He’s also admitted to having large investments in oil companies as these companies make record profits off Trump’s Iran War.
- Keisha Lance Bottoms has made clear she would push for a gas tax suspension as governor. She’s laser focused on lowering costs and making Georgia more affordable for working families.
