After one of the most bruising Republican primaries in Georgia history, Burt Jones has been silent on endorsing Republican nominee Rick Jackson, underscoring the deep divisions with the Georgia GOP heading into the general election.
- In his election night remarks, Jones declined to endorse Jackson – or even even acknowledge the GOP nominee.
- And in a social media video released Wednesday thanking his supporters, Jones again failed to endorse Jackson.
This comes after months of attacks between the two, in which they battled it out to see who is more corrupt, extreme, and out-of-touch with Georgians. While Jackson prevailed on Tuesday, Georgians can’t forget his baggage that they learned about throughout the primary.
- Jones repeatedly called Jackson a “fraud” and accused him of getting “rich off a Medicare kickback scam targeting Georgia’s seniors and pocketed nearly a billion dollars in no-bid taxpayer contracts.”
- In March, Jones took to the Senate floor to attack Rick Jackson and his billion-dollar health care company, calling it the “culprit of our health care costs in this state more than tripling” and accusing it of “monopolizing” the health care industry.
- Jones consistently attacked Jackson for trying to “buy [Georgians’] vote,” said that Jackson is “scared voters will find out about his record,” and in the last few days of the campaign, even accused him of “stalking” Georgians.
Jones’ refusal to endorse Jackson highlights deep fractures within the GOP, at the same time that Georgia Democrats are united firmly behind Keisha Lance Bottoms’ vision of lowering costs, expanding healthcare, and investing in Georgians’ education.
“Rick Jackson faces a deeply divided Georgia GOP, and the fact that Burt Jones refuses to even endorse him just goes to show how fractured Republicans really are,” said Democratic Party of Georgia spokesperson Jake Strickland. “Georgians will not forget what they’ve learned about Jackson’s baggage over the past few months – and that’s exactly why we’re going to send Keisha Lance Bottoms to the Governor’s Mansion in November.”
