In response to attempts by the Republican-appointed Judicial Qualifications Committee’s attempts to curtail candidates’ First Amendment-protected speech and hide the stakes of this year’s judicial elections from voters, Miracle Rankin released the following statement:
“Georgians are entitled to make an informed decision about who you want to sit on your state’s highest court. When powerful interests find themselves lacking in substance, facts, or evidence, they inevitably turn to the oldest tactic in the book: character assassination.
“The JQC has called into question my efforts to educate Georgians about who I am and what I believe, violating my first amendment right to free speech. While trampling on my constitutional rights, they also made things up, attributing actions to me that simply did not occur. Transparency and accuracy is vitally important, especially when one is wholly disregarding my rights and that of the Georgia public who have a right to know who they are voting for.
“The United States Supreme Court has long recognized that the public has a right to hear the views of judicial candidates. They have chosen to attack my campaign because my message is resonating with voters- that judges should serve all Georgians without fear or favor. I’ve spent my career standing up to powerful interests and fighting for people across Georgia to receive equal treatment under the law. I trust that Georgians will see this for what it is and continue to exercise your right to elect who you would like to serve on your Supreme Court.”
