Trump’s visit to Georgia is an impending disaster for Rick Jackson. The president is deeply unpopular here – Trump is 14 points underwater in Georgia according to Fox News, and Jackson’s close embrace of the president throughout his campaign is a major liability with Georgia voters. On Wednesday in Marietta, Jackson will seal his embrace of Trump into a joint picture that will reverberate for the rest of the campaign.
“From the very first day of his campaign, Rick Jackson has made himself inseparable from Donald Trump and his agenda that is hurting Georgia,” said Democratic Party of Georgia Chair Charlie Bailey. “He spent months telling Georgians he’d be ‘just like Trump’ – and now, with the president deeply unpopular and his policies hurting families across the state, Jackson has to eat his own words. Georgians will not forget how closely he’s aligned himself with the president throughout this campaign.”
Jackson has made clear that he will push the same Trump MAGA policies, no matter how much they hurt Georgians. He even told the AJC that “he couldn’t name a single White House policy he disagrees with,” and he’s been “adamant” that the 2020 election was stolen as Trump continues to attack the integrity of Georgia’s elections.
- He admitted to supporting Trump’s Big Billionaire Bill because it lowered his taxes – even as it kicked 500,000 Georgians off their healthcare.
- He supports Trump’s tariffs that have been a “gut punch” to small businesses because he profited off these policies. He has been silent on Trump’s latest tariffs on Canada, one of Georgia’s top trading partners.
- Jackson has strongly supported Trump’s attacks on Georgia elections, with the AJC writing that he has “echoed the president’s false claims of widespread election fraud” and POLITICO writing that he has been “adamant” that the 2020 election was stolen.
- In new AJC reporting in July, Jackson was revealed to have said “what happened in 2020 is just terrible” and that it’s “really easy to believe that, for the last 40 years, Fulton County has been cheating on voting.”
Despite the fact that the president is underwater and is hovering near 42 percent approval in a new Fox News poll, Jackson has closely aligned himself with Trump.
- Jackson has repeatedly told voters that he will be “Trump’s favorite governor” and that he will be “Trump with a Southern tone.”
- Jackson has made clear that he’ll govern “just like Trump,” and has even given Trump multiple $1 million donations to prove his loyalty to him, including as recently as last month.
As CBS Atlanta reports, Trump’s visit this week will “further highlight [Jackson’s] alignment with the president’s policies as the governor’s race heats up.” Those are the very same policies hurting Georgians – and voters will not forget Jackson’s close embrace of Trump in November.
