LISTEN: Rep. Buddy Carter “Applaud[s]” Trump’s Tariffs as Steel and Aluminum Tariffs Double Today

With fears of “slowdown” at Georgia’s ports due to Trump’s tariffs, Republican Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Buddy Carter is strongly backing them.

In a recent event with the Savannah Traffic Club, Carter, who is self-describing as a “MAGA warrior” on the campaign trail, said “I applaud the president for what he is trying to do on tariffs” despite the widespread harm it’s causing working families — even as the Trump administration just doubled the tariffs on steel and aluminum today.

Carter, a mega-millionaire, also admitted that Trump’s tariffs are already causing economic harm, telling the attendees to “be ready” for some “short-term pain” and that he “didn’t want to see” what Trump’s tariffs had done to his retirement account and “just threw it in the file cabinet” to avoid confronting the ugly truth.

Carter’s continued defense of Trump’s disastrous tariffs comes after he voted to give Trump unilateral authority to impose them, and has cheered these price hikes every step of the way. 

“How much do working families across Georgia need to suffer before ‘MAGA warrior’ Buddy Carter stops backing Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs and price hikes that he knows are already wrecking people’s bank accounts?” said DPG Senior Communications Advisor Devon Cruz. “It’s clear that Carter and the other Georgia Republicans who have loyally lined up behind Trump’s tariffs cannot be trusted to put the economic safety of Georgians over their own political ambitions.”
