Know Your Rights

You are eligible to vote in Georgia if:

  • You are a US citizen – either by birth or by completing the naturalization process
  • You are a legal resident of the county where you are registering
  • You are at least 17½ years old and will be 18 on election day
  • You are not serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude
  • You have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge

Your rights under Federal law

  • Vote free from intimidation
  • Cast a vote by provisional ballot
  • Receive assistance when voting
    • You can bring or ask anyone to help you except for your employer, an official of your labor union, a candidate on your ballot, or the family member of a candidate on your ballot.

Your rights under Georgia law

  • Vote free from intimidation
  • Vote, if you are in line by the time polls close
  • Ask to vote by provisional ballot
  • Go to the front of the line if you are 75+ years old or have a physical disability (between 9:30am and 4:30pm on Election Day or anytime during Early Vote).

ID Requirements in Georgia

  • To register to vote in Georgia you must provide one of the following:
    • Your Georgia driver’s license number
    • Other government-issued photo ID
    • If you do not have the above IDs, you may provide the last four digits of your Social Security Number
  • If you are registering to vote for the first time by mail, you will need to provide proof of residency. Acceptable proof includes the following documents that include your current name and address:
    • Current and valid photo ID
    • Utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck 
    • Another government-issued document 
    • (If you are voting by absentee ballot under the Uniform and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act [UOCAVA], you are exempt from this proof-of-residency requirement.)
  • When voting in Georgia, you are required to show a valid photo ID in order to vote. This is solely to confirm your identity, not any of the other information on your ID. Acceptable forms of photo ID include:
    • A Georgia driver’s license, including an expired one.
    • Free Georgia Voter ID card. 
    • Valid Student ID from a Georgia Public College, University, or Technical College. 
      • You can check the list of eligible Georgia colleges and universities here.
    • Valid employee photo ID from any branch, department, agency, or entity of the federal government, state of Georgia, or any county, municipality, board, authority, or other entity of the state Georgia. 
    • Valid U.S. passport.      
    • Valid U.S. military photo ID containing a photograph of the voter.
    • Valid tribal photo ID containing a photograph of the voter.
