ICYMI: Donald Trump Makes Plans to Ban Abortion Nationwide

Today, Democratic Party of Georgia Chair Congresswoman Nikema Williams released the following statement following recent reporting that Donald Trump supports a national abortion ban: 

“Donald Trump has now confirmed what we’ve known all along: his attacks on reproductive freedom will not end with overturning Roe v Wade. He and MAGA Republicans won’t stop until they ban abortion nationwide and ensure that nowhere in the country is safe for reproductive care access.

“When people tell us who they are, we should believe them – and Trump just told us he’ll be the ringleader of extreme MAGA Republicans’ plan to end reproductive freedom in this country. There is only one choice at the ballot box to defend Georgians’ fundamental freedom to control our own health care decisions, and that’s re-electing President Biden and Vice President Harris.”

After Trump’s Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, new reporting over the weekend says Trump has privately admitted to supporting a national abortion ban — all part of his yearslong crusade against women’s reproductive freedom: 

• Trump has taken pride in his campaign against reproductive freedom saying proudly “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade.”

• Trump has also said “Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to.”

• Trump has long supported a nationwide abortion ban, even saying in a speech to his MAGA supporters that “there of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”
  
• Trump and MAGA Republicans want to roll back reproductive freedoms even further. Trump has even gone so far as to call for punishing women who have abortions.
  
• Trump has claimed credit for every extreme abortion ban passed thanks to his work in overturning Roe v. Wade, and said he was ‘proud’ to have terminated abortion rights.
  

President Biden and Vice President Harris will protect a woman’s right to choose, and they have a record of:

• Calling on Congress to codify the protections of Roe into law, restoring rights women relied on for nearly 50 years.
  
• Standing by the FDA’s evidence-based approval of mifepristone — and the Biden-Harris administration will continue to defend the FDA’s independent, expert authority to review, approve, and regulate a wide range of prescription drugs.

• Fighting to ensure access to emergency medical care.
  
• Strengthening patient privacy and access to contraception.
  
• Supporting a woman’s right to travel for medical care.
  
• Promising to veto a national abortion ban.
