A damning new Atlanta Journal-Constitution report has brought Burt Jones under scrutiny for abusing his political office to enrich his family – again. The report reveals that Jones’ family stands to profit from a massive land development project made possible by policy changes that Jones personally championed.

“Burt Jones is using his power in office to enrich himself and his family – it’s corruption, plain and simple,” said Charlie Bailey, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Georgians are sick and tired of fat cat politicians who are only out for themselves, not the people they’re supposed to represent. That’s why, in 2026, Georgians aren’t giving Burt Jones or any Republican the chance to keep lining their pockets at our expense.”

According to the report, Jones’ family owns the parcel of land in Butts County that is expected to be the site of the mega-development project, which includes a hospital and 11 million square feet of data centers. Jones started pushing more than two years ago for changes to hospital construction rules that would allow a hospital to be built on this land – he abandoned the original legislation when he came under fierce public criticism for self-dealing, but unwilling to forgo a chance to profit off his political office, he helped the changes pass last year. Now his family is set to rake in massive profits from the project.

Chris Carr wasted no time laying into Jones over the damning report, slamming him for “using his office to benefit himself and his family”. Jones’ campaign fired back, saying Carr was “grasping at straws because he’s stuck in a distant third place” – the latest volley in an already messy GOP primary marked by insults, infighting and vitriol. Just this week, Republicans refused to vote on a “comity” resolution intended to diffuse the nasty infighting and division surrounding the primary.
