House Republicans Pass Dangerous Campus Carry Bill

Atlanta, GA – Today, Democratic Party of Georgia Executive Director Rebecca DeHart issued the following statement on the passage of HB 859—legislation that would allow college students to carry a gun most places on Georgia college, university, and technical school campuses.

“At the exact same time a mass shooter is getting arraigned in a college town in Michigan for gunning down 6 people over the weekend, Georgia Republicans are spending tax payer dollars to figure out how to get more guns into more hands, this time targeting college campuses. As a Democrat, I’m not surprised. As a voter, I’m beyond frustrated. But as a mom? As a mom I’m downright horrified by their callous, shallow action.

“Parents shouldn’t have to pack a Kevlar vest when sending their kids off to college. Nor should they have to save up for out-of-state tuition. But that’s exactly what will happen. I don’t know one parent who thinks this is a good idea.

“Instead of making the safety of our college campuses a priority, Georgia Republicans are pandering to the gun lobby, at the expense of Georgia families.”
