Georgia GOP candidates in multiple statewide races stand ready to not only restrict abortion if elected, but to enact extreme total bans that are wildly out of step with what Georgians want. While an overwhelming majority of Georgians support abortion rights, Republican candidates say if Roe v. Wade is overturned, they’ll work to ban all abortion – even in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother’s life.
- Herschel Walker wants to totally ban all abortions, even in cases of rape, incest or to save the mother’s life.
- David Perdue has said that if he were governor, he would call a special legislative session “to eliminate all abortion in the state of Georgia” – no exceptions.
- Brian Kemp bragged about signing “the toughest abortion bill in the country” in 2019, and his vocal support for the Texas abortion bansuggests he is prepared to push through an even more extreme ban in Georgia should Roe v. Wade be overturned. Kemp has remained silent on his fellow GOP candidates’ calls for a total ban on abortion.
- And when Lieutenant Governor candidates – including Burt Jones and Butch Miller – were asked about abortion at this week’s debate, “all four Republican candidates said they support a ban on all abortions, regardless of how far along the pregnancy is, how the pregnancy occurred or if the pregnancy risks the life of the mother.”
“In violation of half a century of precedent and against the will of a vast majority of Georgians, Republicans running for office at all levels stand ready to ban abortion entirely – even in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the mother’s life. This dangerous position is deadly and too extreme for Georgia, a state that already has the second-highest maternal mortality rate,” said Rebecca Galanti, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Georgia.
