This week, the GOP candidates for governor continued working overtime to out-MAGA each other, with billionaire Rick Jackson now admitting he would “absolutely confirm” a total abortion ban if elected governor. This comes as the entire field faces questions about their willingness to engage with voters in what has become a big-dollar brawl between the candidates.
Here’s more on the raucous race to the right dominating the GOP gubernatorial primary:
JACKSON BACKS TOTAL ABORTION BAN: New reporting this week revealed that Jackson would “absolutely confirm” a total abortion ban if elected governor – just the latest sign of how out-of-step the GOP field is with Georgia voters.
- On Wednesday, American Journal News revealed that Jackson would support a total abortion ban if one was brought to his desk – and also bragged about working “behind-the-scenes” to get Georgia’s current six-week ban over the finish line.
REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES CALLED OUT FOR NOT ENGAGING WITH VOTERS: On his show Wednesday night, conservative radio host Shelley Wynter laced into the entire GOP gubernatorial field – calling them “punks” for refusing to engage with voters.
- He then called out Jackson specifically, saying that GOP candidates like Jackson who refuse to debate are “not in any way, shape, or form qualified to be governor.”
- This comes as Jackson has repeatedly faced questions about his willingness to engage with voters, especially after Jackson’s campaign has questioned the value of debates.
PRIMARY REACHES $90 MILLION – AND THE NEGATIVE ADS KEEP FLYING: As Jones and Jackson have spent nearly $90 million attacking each other, the attacks continue to ramp up.
- Jones once again attacked Jackson’s business dealings this week, writing on social media that “Rick’s money just comes from the people of Georgia – to the tune of 931M.”
- Jackson fired back, questioning Jones’ knowledge of the state and writing on social media that “when Burt Jones says something, odds are it’s complete BS.”
THIS WEEK’S MUST READ: The AJC’s Patricia Murphy wrote a must-read column on how “the battle of bottomless bank accounts, the arms race of negative ads between Jackson and Jones is veering toward mutually assured destruction.”
