Ruling gutting federal voting rights protections raises the stakes for May 19th Supreme Court and Court of Appeals elections

“Today’s egregious decision gutting the Voting Rights Act – a law whose protections Congressman John Lewis was beaten bloody marching for in Selma – is the latest step in a desperate plot by Donald Trump, Republicans, and their right-wing allies on the U.S. Supreme Court to hold onto power by suppressing the vote.

“This erosion of voting rights by the U.S. Supreme Court underscores, yet again, the stakes of Georgia’s May 19th judicial elections. With voter protections gutted at the federal level, state courts will be the last line of defense for our rights – and we must elect pro-rights, pro-democracy candidates Miracle Rankin, Jen Jordan, and Will Wooten to hold that line.

“Finally, let us be clear: this plot to dilute the power of the voters will not succeed. Republican efforts to discourage voters from the ballot box will only galvanize us further, and we will show up in record numbers to throw them out of office and elect Democrats up and down the ballot who will protect our fundamental rights.”
