Today, Democratic Party of Georgia Chair Charlie Bailey released the following statement on the 53rd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, and after years of Georgians now living under one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country:
“Today, we mark four years since the fall of nearly 50 years of legal protections granted in Roe v. Wade.
“Since the recent and disastrous overturning of this monumental Supreme Court decision in 2022, Georgia Republicans have rushed to enact some of the harshest restrictions on reproductive freedom in the entire country. Over the past four years, our state has been rocked by the tragic deaths of women who were prevented from accessing life-saving care by Governor Brian Kemp and Republicans’ extreme abortion ban.
“Despite the stark evidence that their extreme ban is hurting Georgians, hamstringing doctors, and costing lives, Georgia Republicans running at every level of the ticket have doubled down on their support for ripping away reproductive freedom. GOP Senate candidates Buddy Carter, Mike Collins, and Derek Dooley have all supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Burt Jones, Chris Carr, and Brad Raffensperger have all supported extreme abortion bans on the state level. Promoting any of these Republicans to higher office in November would bring further risk and suffering to Georgia women.
“Georgia Democrats will never stop fighting for Georgians’ freedom to control their own health care decisions, and this November we will hold Republicans up and down the ballot accountable for their attacks on reproductive freedom.”
