Today, Rick Jackson qualified to run for governor, the latest Republican in a GOP primary that has been defined by the candidates staking out extreme and unpopular cost-raising positions that are deeply out of touch with the needs of Georgia families.

In response, DPG spokesperson Jake Strickland issued the following statement:

“Rick Jackson is an out-of-touch billionaire who is running to raise costs and block working families from getting health care. Jackson has one strategy to win this race: light tens of millions of his own money on fire to try and be even more extreme and out-of-touch than Burt Jones. No matter who wins, we’re confident that we’ll face an out-of-touch extremist and elect a Democratic governor.”

As this far-right GOP primary battle gets underway, Jackson has routinely staked out extreme positions that have jacked up costs and worsened Georgia’s health care crisis:

  • Jackson opposes Medicaid expansion, which has resulted in nine rural hospitals closing their doors across the state since 2009.
  • Jackson strongly supports Georgia’s extreme abortion ban, even as it has resulted in a maternal mortality crisis sweeping the state.
  • Jackson has pledged that he will be “Trump’s favorite governor” and that he “can’t name a single White House policy he disagrees with” even as Trump’s budget bill resulted in 1.4 million Georgians seeing their premiums skyrocket by more than $860 on average.
