DPG Statement on President Trump’s Joint Session Address to Congress

Following President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, Democratic Party of Georgia spokesman Dave Hoffman released the following statement:

Prices that were supposed to be suddenly lowered 43 days ago once President Trump took office are higher. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are under attack, even though candidate Trump repeatedly promised they wouldn’t be. Between President Trump breaking these promises and him outsourcing the dismantling of our government to his unelected billionaire bankroller Elon Musk, it’s no surprise that at this point in his term, President Trump is the least popular president in modern American history.

Trump’s first month for Georgians by the numbers:

Federal firings and funding freezes:

• Trump attacked Georgia farmers by forcing the cancellation of millions of dollars’ worth of contracts with USAID.
• Trump slashed funding for planned upgrades to Georgia’s power grid, ensuring that ratepayers will shoulder rising energy costs. 
• Trump fired more than 1000 workers at the Atlanta-based CDC.

Medicaid and SNAP benefits for Georgians at risk:

• Nearly 2 million Georgians rely on Medicaid.
• Medicaid covers 42% of Georgia children.
• SNAP supports over 1.4 million Georgia residents, most of whom are at or below the poverty line.
• More than 69% of Georgia SNAP participants are in families with children.

Georgia’s unemployment filings and layoffs have spiked under Donald Trump’s economy:

• Since Donald Trump began his second term, over 21,000 Georgians have filed for unemployment.
• Since Trump took office, there have been eight mass layoffs in Georgia. 
• Now, experts are predicting that Trump’s economy could cause a recession.
