Today marks one year after Donald Trump enacted sweeping, illegal tariffs on “Liberation Day,” which have significantly increased costs, taken money out of Georgians’ pockets, and resulted in more jobs lost than any year since COVID, particularly at the Port of Savannah. Since then, Georgians have been the ones to foot the $7.1 billion tariff bill — one of the highest totals across the country.
As Trump continues pushing even more tariffs, the GOP candidates for U.S. Senate — Buddy Carter, Mike Collins, and Derek Dooley — as well as GOP candidates for governor Burt Jones, Rick Jackson, Brad Raffensperger, and Chris Carr — have all backed Trump’s economy crushing tariffs while Georgians pay the price.
In response, DPG Chair Charlie Bailey released the following statement:
“Life is a hell of a lot more expensive than before Trump’s tariff tax increases. They’ve jacked up the cost of everything from food to fuel to housing, and Georgians are footing the bill — all while Trump is personally enriching himself and building a ballroom in his honor.
“But as families across our state struggle just to keep up, every single Republican running for both Senate and governor has supported these price hikes since day one. Whether it’s Collins, Carter, and Dooley running to force Trump’s MAGA agenda on Georgians – or Jones, Jackson, Raffensperger, and Carr working to raise costs from the Governor’s mansion – we simply cannot afford more of the GOP’s economy crushing chaos, and that’s exactly why we’ll elect Democrats up and down the ballot this fall.”
