Today, Burt Jones qualified to run for governor, the latest Republican in a GOP primary that has been defined by the candidates staking out extreme and unpopular cost-raising positions that are deeply out of touch with the needs of Georgia families.

In response, DPG spokesperson Jake Strickland issued the following statement:

“Burt Jones is running a campaign that is about appealing to two people: Donald Trump and his daddy’s bank account. Jones has spent his time in office backing MAGA policies that make Georgia less affordable, block access to health care, and take away reproductive freedoms. Jones is running to bring Donald Trump’s deeply unpopular agenda to the Governor’s Mansion – and he couldn’t be more out of touch with Georgia families, workers, and businesses.”

As this far-right GOP primary battle gets underway, Jones has routinely staked out extreme positions that have jacked up costs and worsened Georgia’s health care crisis:

  • Jones stood side-by-side with Trump in Rome as the president mocked the affordability crisis, even as Georgians spend $1,200 more annually to keep up with the cost of living.
  • Jones also stood by Trump as he called tariffs “beautiful,” even as WABE reports that Georgia’s soybean farmers are urging against any further tariffs. This comes as Jones had previously shared in an 1-on-1 interview with 11Alive that he was not concerned about the tariffs’ impacts on Georgia farmers, even as the Georgia Farm Bureau has long warned that “[t]ariffs pose threats to many Georgia farmers.”
  • Jones strongly supported Trump’s budget bill that has resulted in 1.4 million Georgians seeing their premiums skyrocket by more than $860 a month on average.
  • Jones also staunchly defended Trump’s FBI raid, and went as far to serve as a fake elector in order to undermine the will of Georgia voters.
