The Republican candidates for governor have been completely silent on ICE abuses in Minnesota – including the killing of an American citizen. In response, DPG Chair Charlie Bailey released the following statement:

“The killing of Alex Pretti by masked armed federal agents has horrified the nation, and Georgians are strongly speaking out against this grievous abuse of power. But rather than level with Georgians, the Republican candidates for governor – Burt Jones, Chris Carr, and Brad Raffensperger – have remained completely silent, as have the leading Republican candidates for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. Their refusal to speak out at a time when Americans are being killed and our rights are under attack raises serious questions about how they would lead our state if ever confronted by crisis. Georgia Democrats have made clear that we will stand strongly against these police state tactics – and now it’s time for the Republicans to stop hiding and let Georgians know once and for all whether they would stand up for the constitutional rights of Georgians and against these brazen abuses of power.”

Unlike the GOP candidates vying for governor, Republicans across the nation are speaking out against the killing of Alex Pretti:

  • Georgia’s own Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on X: “There is nothing wrong with legally peacefully protesting and videoing.”
  • Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Madel dropped out of the race over concerns about the killing, saying: “I can’t look my daughters in the eye and say I’m running as a Republican, when they’re pulling over Hispanics and Asians because of the color of the skin and what they look like…I did not sign up for that.”
  • Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy wrote on X: “The events in Minneapolis are incredibly disturbing. The credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake. There must be a full joint federal and state investigation. We can trust the American people with the truth.”
  • Utah Republican Senator John Curtis wrote on X: “We must have a transparent, independent investigation into the Minnesota shooting, and those responsible—no matter their title—must be held accountable. Officials who rush to judgment before all the facts are known undermine public trust and the law-enforcement mission.”
