Help Move Georgia Forward
Today, after Brian Kemp quietly signed SB 140, a bill banning evidence-based health care for trans youth, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:
“With his signature on SB 140, Brian Kemp has further cemented his legacy of attacking Georgians’ rights, infringing on private medical decisions, and targeting our state’s most vulnerable in a craven attempt to shore up his far-right base and advance his own political career.
“Let’s be clear: SB 140 will outlaw the care necessary to save children’s lives. It is not only cruel, but it flies in the face of medical science, standards of patient care, and the lived experiences of those whom it impacts.
“Georgia Democrats are grateful for the parents, transgender youth, doctors, experts, and advocates who showed up in full force to warn of the dangers of this bill and urge our elected leaders to find the courage to oppose it. While we are disappointed in our governor’s cowardice, this fight is not over. Georgians deserve better than Brian Kemp and today’s Georgia GOP, who have shown time and again – including today both in the halls of Congress and under the Gold Dome – that they believe parental rights, bodily autonomy, and liberty for all only apply to those who think like them. We will not stop until trans youth and every Georgian have access to the care they need to thrive in this state and reach their full potential.”
