Today, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Alabama’s Congressional map after finding that it diluted Black voters’ power in the state. In response, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision is a resounding win for democracy – and a clear signal that Republicans’ days of suppressing votes via gerrymandering are numbered.

“The racial gerrymandering in Alabama that the Supreme Court struck down today is egregious, but unfortunately par for the course in Republican-controlled states, including Georgia – Republicans know that they can’t win on their ideas, so they resort to silencing voters with unfair maps.

“Here in Georgia, where in 2021 Republicans hastily redrew our Congressional map to give themselves a significant advantage and minimize the voting power of people of color, this ruling is a source of hope. Georgia Democrats are deeply committed to a democracy where every single voter’s voice is heard, and today’s decision is a step forward in the fight to realize that vision.”
