Democratic Party of Georgia Statement on Constitutional Office and State Legislature Races

November 8, 2022

After all of the races for constitutional office and state legislative seats have been called, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Georgia, issued the following statement:

“This year, Georgia Democrats saw more candidates qualify to run for office than ever before – fielding the most talented, diverse slate of candidates up and down the ballot in our state’s history. While yesterday’s election results for constitutional office didn’t turn out as we had hoped, we are incredibly proud of all of the Democratic nominees for stepping up to run for office: Stacey Abrams, Charlie Bailey, Bee Nguyen, Jen Jordan, Alisha Thomas Searcy, Nakita Hemingway, Janice Laws Robinson, and William Boddie comprised a truly historic slate of candidates, and each one challenged us to expand our vision for what’s possible in the state of Georgia and how our leaders can best serve the people.

“Democrats have much to be proud of in our gains made in Georgia’s state legislature, having picked up five seats in the State Senate and State House collectively and making history. The Democratic Party of Georgia is thrilled to congratulate all of our twenty-four new State Representatives-elect and four new State Senators-elect, all of whom will represent their communities with distinction at the State Capitol. The investments Democrats have been making all cycle have paid off – thanks to the work of Senate Minority Leader Gloria Butler, House Minority Leader James Beverly, dedicated caucus staff, and our frontline candidates across the state, Georgia Democrats gained seats in both chambers even in the face of Republican gerrymandering.

“We are also celebrating historic firsts: State Representative-elect Ruwa Romman and State Senator-elect Nabilah Islam will be the first Muslim women in their respective chambers, and State Representative-elect Phil Olaleye and State Senator-elect Jason Esteves will be the first Afro-Latinos in their respective chambers. Georgia Democrats know that representation matters, and we will continue fighting to make sure our elected leaders reflect our state.

“Make no mistake – the stakes in Georgia couldn’t be higher. Last legislative session, Georgians witnessed an unrelenting attack on our rights, safety, and quality of life at the hands of the Republican state trifecta, and the GOP has shown no signs of slowing down. Now with even more brilliant, dedicated members in our caucuses, Democrats under the Gold Dome are ready to lead the fight to protect Georgia families and safeguard our rights and freedoms.”
