Help Move Georgia Forward
In response to today’s decision by the Supreme Court to weaken the Voting Rights Act, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, released the following statement:
“The right to vote is among the most sacred rights in our democracy, and the Supreme Court has dealt another significant blow to that right by weakening the Voting Rights Act. Today’s ruling dishonors the legacy of heroes like the late Congressman John Lewis, who endured a long, bloody struggle in the fight to pass the Voting Rights Act and ensure every American has equal access to the ballot box. Our courts should be enforcing the voting rights laws that decades of racial inequality necessitated – not undercutting them.
“Though the Supreme Court’s decision is deeply disappointing, it is not fatal to recent claims brought by the Department of Justice against Georgia over its discriminatory anti-voting law, nor is it the end of the fight for voting rights by any means. This ruling further highlights the urgent need for federal legislation to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act and defend the right to vote. Our democracy is on the line, and Democrats will continue to use every tool at our disposal to protect the sacred right to vote for all.”
