Help Move Georgia Forward
Ahead of tomorrow’s vote by the Fulton County Commission to elect a new chair of the Fulton Board of Elections, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, and LeWanna Heard-Tucker, Chair of the Fulton County Democrats, released the following joint statement:
“The Democratic Party of Georgia and Fulton County Democrats stand united in opposition to the nomination of Republican Lee Morris as Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Elections. As Georgia’s most populous county and one on the receiving end of widespread, nationwide attacks designed to sow mistrust in our elections, Fulton needs a proven defender of democracy and champion of voting rights at the helm of its elections board – not someone who could allow the Fulton County Board of Elections to become a forum for entertaining the GOP’s endless election conspiracy theories. A Republican who voted in support of S.B. 202 does not meet that crucial criteria.
“Fulton County voters deserve to have their voices heard and values represented on the Board of Elections. As members of the Fulton County delegation in Georgia’s State House have said, it is unacceptable that a Republican should control the Board of Elections for the largest Democratic county in Georgia – much less one whom Fulton voters rejected at the ballot box just this past year.
“The stakes could not be higher for Fulton County and the state of Georgia in 2024 and beyond. We urge all Democratic members of the Fulton County Commission to reject the nomination of Mr. Morris, and will continue engaging with local leaders to ensure the Fulton Board of Elections chooses a chair who can be trusted to protect the sacred right to vote and unequivocally stand up to election deniers.”
